House, Senate OK redistricting maps

Legislators have sent redrawn maps of Maine's House and Senate districts on to Gov. Paul LePage for approval after votes in both chambers Wednesday.

The Bangor Daily News reported the Senate approved the new maps unanimously and the House passed them by a 133-11 margin. Redistricting maps require a two-thirds majority vote to pass.

The largest changes from the new map include elimination of a House seat representing Aroostook County, as a result of shrinking population there, and the addition of a House seat in the Gray-New Gloucester area.

Democrats and Republicans hailed the new maps as a compromise while Independent Rep. Jeffrey Evangelos of Friendship criticized the process that put his town of residence in a district including Waldoboro, now represented by Republican Rep. Ellen Winchenbach.

The paper reported that Evangelos was the only of five independent legislators in the House to vote against the new maps.
