House votes to support minimum wage increase

The Maine House has taken a step toward raising the state's minimum wage to $9 by 2016.

The Bangor Daily News reported the House voted 86-58, mostly along party lines, to advance a bill that would raise the state's minimum wage 50 cents each year until 2016, meaning the minimum wage would rise to $8 next year, $8.50 in 2015 and $9 in 2016.

A legislative committee voted 8-5 last week, also along party lines, in support of the bill.

The bill now faces additional votes in the Senate and House, where Democratic majorities are expected to give the bill a good chance of passing. But Gov. Paul LePage has expressed opposition to the minimum wage increase and could strike it down with a veto.
