The iconic Jasper’s Restaurant and Motel in Ellsworth, founded by Jasper Tilden in 1957, is now under contract to be bought by an undisclosed buyer, The Ellsworth American reported.
At a recent special city council meeting, current owner Troy Adams, Tilden’s grandson, received permission to set up a payment plan for back property taxes of approximately $78,000, allowing him to avoid city foreclosure.
The newspaper uncovered an undated listing on the commercial real estate website BizBuySell.com that showed an asking price of $1.6 million for that property and two others owned by Adams.
At the meeting, City Manager David Cole said the arrangement is in the city’s best interest, “rather than looking at foreclosure and an empty building.”
According to the establishment’s website, founder Tilden was a long-time victualer in Ellsworth, starting as a seafood wholesaler, then opening the popular Clam Shack in 1948.
With a partner, he later opened the Brookside Restaurant that was destroyed by fire In 1954. The partners rebuilt, but Tilden sold out his interest in 1957 and bought the small restaurant and motel across the street on today's site.
