MaineGeneral Health in Augusta recently announced the formation of a campaign cabinet and steering committee to help raise $10 million in local funds to build a new regional hospital in Augusta.
The local funds will be matched by a $10 million challenge grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation, part of a $35 million gift the foundation announced in early May to support the project.
The new regional hospital was formally approved by Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Brenda Harvey. Groundbreaking for the new facility is planned for the spring of 2011, with the new hospital set to open in the winter of 2014.
