Spotlight

HealthInfoNet’s Maine Regional Extension Center was recently awarded $968,275 in additional funds to help health care providers in Maine adopt electronic health records, according to a press release from the organization. HealthInfoNet has now brought more than $6 million in federal funding to Maine.

The recently announced funds represent additional funding awarded to MEREC through the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Health Information Technology Extension Program. More than $830,000 will be used to ensure primary care providers, working under the MEREC program, will use electronic health records that meet new federal requirements for sharing and use of health information. The remaining money will be used to help 22 critical-access and rural Maine hospitals adopt and effectively use electronic health records and information exchanges to improve care for their patients.

The Maine Medical Center Physician-Hospital Organization in Portland was recently selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as a convener in the Medicare Imaging Demonstration, a demonstration project that promotes appropriate utilization of advanced imaging services.

The Department of the Navy recently announced its plans to invest $16 million in construction and modernization work on Dry Dock No. 1 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. The dry dock is one of three dry docks used for submarine engineering overhauls at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Scott Levy recently announced that he will step down as producing artistic director of Penobscot Theatre Co. in June of this year.

The Health Services Foundation recently presented Katahdin Valley Health Center, a federally qualified health center, with a grant of $12,970. The grant will be used for specific diagnostic equipment, a tympanometer, two electrocardiogram machines and spirometry equipment for the health center’s family practice sites in Houlton, Island Falls, Patten and Millinocket.

Northeast Bancorp, a Lewiston-based financial services company and parent of Northeast Bank, recently reported operating results for its fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010. Results include the effect of the accounting treatment for the merger of Northeast Bancorp and FHB Formation LLC on Dec. 29, 2010. This transaction, in which FHB was merged into Northeast, contributed approximately $16.2 million of new capital to the company.

Bangor Savings Bank recently celebrated the opening of its new Northgate branch at 320 Allen Ave. in Portland.

The USDA Rural Development recently awarded Distance Learning and Telemedicine grants to the following: $441,841 to Rangeley School Department for video conferencing equipment to enhance its special education program; $476,336 to Maine Educational Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing for reaching out to the deaf and hard of hearing in rural Maine; and $146,903 to Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice to connect patients with quality health care via telemedicine technology.
