Incinerator talks cool

A plan by the developer of Saco Island to buy the Maine Energy Recovery Co. trash incinerator in Biddeford has stalled thanks to the poor economy.

Mattson Development LLC of Winthrop said in August it had entered negotiations with Casella Waste Systems, based in Rutland, Vt., to buy MERC and eventually close it, according to Current Publishing. The trash incinerator plant has been called a stumbling block for downtown economic development efforts in Saco and Biddeford.

Mattson Development COO Bob Martin would not comment on the status of negotiations with Casella, but Brian Oliver, Casella's regional vice president, said the talks had "temporarily cooled off" due, in part, to poor credit markets, according to Current Publishing.
