Incubator for new lawyers launched in Portland

A Portland nonprofit organization launched this fall will serve as an incubator for new lawyers and provide lower-cost legal representation to clients.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Maine Community Law Center is part of a growing national movement of incubators for recent law school graduates.

Elizabeth Stout, the executive director of the law center, told the paper that it offers an alternative to working as associates at large firms, which haven’t hired as many new graduates in recent years.

The American Bar Association lists 51 other incubator programs in the country, which began at City University of New York School of Law in 2007, according to the Press Herald.

The first two lawyers hired by the center this summer — Jacqueline Moss and Elizabeth Fuller Valentine — both graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 2014.

Besides offering a hands-on training ground for new lawyers, the center provides legal services on a sliding fee scale to serve people who make too much money to qualify for free legal aid but not enough to hire a lawyer at standard fees.
