Blue Marble Geographics will move its research-and-development operations from Hallowell to Industrial Parkway in Brunswick as the geo-mapping firm continues to grow.
Company president and CEO Patrick Cunningham said that the company expects to expand from 40 to 75 employees in the next couple of years, and moving its R&D closer to Portland should help.
Its corporate headquarters, including sales and marketing and operations, will remain at 22 Carriage Lane in Hallowell.
“This is an exciting time for us,” said Cunningham. “We have a very talented group of professionals working for us and intend to significantly grow our operations here in Maine in the next few years. By moving our development headquarters closer to Portland, we hope to attract and retain new technical talent.”
The company will lease 5,200 square feet at 9 Industrial Parkway in Brunswick. The lease was brokered by Nick Lucas, of The Boulos Co. The Brunswick office will focus on research and development, as well as core software programming for 3D data visualization and processing, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and processing of light detection-and-ranging data, or LiDAR, the release said.
The company says the Brunswick site will give it space for both current and future growth. "The Portland area was selected for this expansion due to its reputation as a highly desirable place to live and its growing tech economy," the release said. The new space is 26 miles from Portland — about half the distance from Portland to Hallowell.
The company bought the 6,468-square-foot office building in Hallowell in 2015, moving there from 77 Water St. and doubling its space. At the time, Cunningham said the company employed 30 and planned to add 10 in the next five years.
Blue Marble Geographics develops geographic information system and geodetic software, and has been in a rapid growth mode since the acquisition of Global Mapper in 2011, the release said.
The company last week announced its first official partnership with a UK GIS-focused company — COPTRZ, UK Commercial Drone Experts. COPTRZ, which provides comprehensive support to businesses interested in using drones, will include Blue Marble’s GIS software and point cloud processing software Global Mapper and the LiDAR Module to its portfolio of surveying solutions.
The company has a number of immediate software development, testing, and tech support job openings, with additional positions to be added later in 2020.
Construction is well underway on the new Jordan’s Furniture store at the Maine Mall in South Portland. Jewett Construction, of Scarborough, is the contractor on the redevelopment of 120,000 square feet of showroom, as well as an outlet center at the mall.
“Jewett Construction is thrilled to be partnering with Jordan’s Furniture on this monumental project for the state of Maine,” said Jon Sirois, vice president of Maine operations at Jewett. “The Maine Mall has over 9 million visitors annually. We know that this project will bring great shopping and fun to the community for years to come.”
The store, which will be one of the largest in Maine, is taking over the space that's been vacant, except for some pop-up retail, since Bon-Ton closed in April 2017. Jordan's is expected to open in the spring and is the first of the East Taunton, Mass.-based chain's stores in Maine.
