Mila Kofman, who has served as Maine's superintendent of insurance for three years, will leave her position at the end of the month.
Kofman will depart June 1, according to a press release from the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. She has served as insurance superintendent since March 2008, during which time she created a market examination unit to ensure that insurers act within state law, improved the bureau's enforcement process and made it easier for consumers to file complaints and seek help from the bureau. Kofman also gained publicity for denying rate hikes requested by Anthem, and during her tenure, the state's rate review process was recognized on a federal level and made a national model. "Over the last three years, my top priorities have been to increase efficiency, accountability and transparency," she said in the release.
In 2010, Kofman, previously a professor at Georgetown University, was reappointed to serve a five-year term as insurance superintendent. The press release did not specify why Kofman is leaving.
