J.D. Irving Ltd. forecasts 7,500 full-time hires over the next three years, as well as more than 2,500 student hires across the company's operations in Canada and the United States.

According to a company news release, in the U.S., there will be 322 full-time hires and 120 student hires.

Company spokeswoman Mary Keith told the Bangor Daily News that 300 of the U.S. hires will be in Maine, with most of the Maine jobs split between its Ashland and Dixfield saw mills and its woodland operations.

Keith said 89% of the jobs are in Atlantic Canada. Across the organization, the areas with the highest number of job opportunities include operations, shipping, supply and logistics, retail sales, and finance.

The three-year forecast is a result of anticipated retirements, business growth and normal workforce turnover, the release said.

Headquartered in St. John, New Brunswick, J.D. Irving has 15,000 employees, with business units in agriculture, construction and equipment, consumer products, food, forestry and forestry products, retail and distribution, shipbuilding and industrial fabrication, and transportation and logistics.

The company has 1.26 million acres in northern Maine. According to its outcome-based forestry overview for Maine, released Jan. 18, the company planted 2.95 million trees planted in Maine in 2018. From 2012 to 2016, it made $87 million in capital investment.

Last May, J.D. Irving proposed a concept plan for 51,000 acres in Aroostook County, asking the Maine Land Use Planning Commission to allow new commercial and residential development around the Fish River Lakes chain, in addition to conservation plans and continued logging operations.
