Island Institute nets $1.2M for education

Rockland-based nonprofit The Island Institute has received more than $1 million in federal funds to boost interest in science and technology education in rural areas.

The $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation will fund the expansion of a program aimed at increasing students' competencies in science, technology, engineering and math in rural communities, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Energy for ME program engages students in STEM subjects through the study of energy technology and efficiency. The program will work with 13 of Maine's year-round island and coastal communities, and 50 teachers and 100 students will study energy usage at their schools and compete to save the most energy.

Last year, a $50,000 from Time Warner Cable's "Connect a Million Minds" initiative and $124,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency funded a pilot program on North Haven and Vinalhaven. The institute is partnering with Blue Hill-based PowerWise to give schools energy monitoring equipment.
