ISO NE plans smart grid upgrades

ISO New England, Maine's transmission grid operator, is using an $8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install high-speed sensors that will spot potential outages and other disruptions more quickly.

The smart-grid devices will monitor voltage and other conditions on the grid and relay information 30 times a second, up from once every four seconds, according to the Associated Press. The grant will cover nearly half the cost of the upgrade, with the rest funded by ISO New England and transmission owners participating in the project.

Installation is expected to begin this summer, with completion slated in three years.
