IT firm Carbonite to hire 250 in Lewiston
Carbonite, a Boston-based IT company that offers online data backup services, is expanding to Lewiston and planning to eventually hire 250 people.
Company and state officials this morning announced the opening of the new customer support center that is expected to employ 150 workers by the end of the year, according to a press release from Carbonite. The company is currently negotiating a lease for a space in Lewiston and is planning to open this summer. CEO David Friend said in the release that the company is focusing on expanding its U.S.-based customer service representatives and that "Maine just seemed like the perfect place for us." According to a press release from U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, the technical support work that will be done in Lewiston was previously performed overseas. Maine & Co., a consulting firm that helps businesses locate in Maine, played a key role in bringing Carbonite to the state and said the jobs would pay between $35,000 and $55,000 a year.
Founded in 2005, Carbonite provides online backup services for consumers and small businesses, and has more than one million subscribers in over 100 countries. Last year, it was ranked as the ninth fastest growing private company and the fastest growing IT services company by Inc. magazine.
