Bar Harbor-based Jackson Laboratory has pulled its application to expand in Florida, citing a desire explore new funding options with that state's new administration.
The organization withdrew its state application for a $400 million research facility and 200 jobs in Collier County with plans to work with new Gov. Rick Scott "to align the project with his goals for growing the state's economy," according to a press release. Jackson Lab has pitched the new facility as an anchor for a biomedical research and education village in eastern Collier County, and had applied for funding through the state's Innovation Incentive Fund program. But a group of taxpayers and a private medical manufacturing firm filed lawsuits challenging the Florida Legislature's decision to borrow $130 million to fund the project, which would have been matched by taxpayer money, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Jackson Lab CEO Charles Hewett told MPBN he wants to work with Scott to "restructure our proposal in a way that fits" with the new governor's ideas for financing.
Jackson Lab is "very enthusiastic" about the project and plans to meet with Scott and his administration as soon as possible, according to the release.
