Jackson Lab to close on Ellsworth Lowe's

The Jackson Laboratory is under contract to buy a 140,000-square-foot former Lowe's building in Ellsworth, where the nonprofit plans to locate warehousing, administration and mouse production.

The Bangor Daily News reported that it might still be a few years before any lab employees are working in the building, but only some final paperwork remains to close the deal.

The Ellsworth expansion plans come as the lab also looks to grow its Sacramento, Calif., campus and break ground on a research facility in Connecticut.

Annually, the lab breeds 2.7 million lab mice that it provides to thousands of research facilities around the world.

The Ellsworth Lowe's has been vacant since January of 2008 as part of the hardware chain's closure of 19 stores across the country.
