JAX fined by EPA

The Jackson Laboratory has reached a settlement to pay a $161,680 fine for failing to properly store and handle explosive chemicals and other waste, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.

The failures posed a potentially serious risk to workers at the Bar Harbor lab, which also did not provide annual training for employees with hazardous waste management responsibilities, the EPA said in a release, according to the Portland Press Herald. Further, the lab stored hazardous chemicals at its facility without notifying the local fire department, emergency planning committee and Maine's emergency response commission, the EPA alleged.
