The state's decision to end a MaineCare contract with an Aetna subsidiary will lead to the elimination of 34 jobs in South Portland.
The state's decision comes as it reviews contracts associated with MaineCare, its Medicaid program, to tackle fiscal troubles, according to the Portland Press Herald. The state plans to drop some administrative services covered under the annual $7 million contract with Aetna subsidiary Schaller Anderson and shift some responsibilities to state workers instead. The contract, in its third year, was up for renewal at the end of the fiscal year. Tom Kelly, president and CEO of Schaller Anderson, told the paper Aetna is hoping to find other work for the 34 employees affected by the contract loss.
Schaller Anderson manages Medicaid programs in 11 states, handling pre-authorization of claims and care management for more than 7,000 low-income patients, or about 2% of MaineCare's patients. The company will cease pre-authorization work at the end of March, and halt care management April 30, according to the paper.
