An auction for a Casco Bay lighthouse continues, with the highest bid reaching $175,000, and two Maine bidders may team up to buy it.
The federal government is auctioning off Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse off of Cape Elizabeth, with each high bid extending the rolling end date by 24 hours. Portland real estate developer Arthur Girard yesterday placed the high bid of $175,000, and other bidders have until 3 p.m. today to outbid him, according to the Portland Press Herald. Girard beat a $170,000 bid offered by an anonymous bidder who could be Dr. Jeffrey Florman of Windham. Florman did not confirm making the bid, but told the paper that he and Girard intend to meet to discuss working together should a third bidder, who recently offered $160,000, opt to place another bid. Both Maine bidders said they hope to keep the historic lighthouse under local ownership. The identity of the third bidder is not known.
The two men also plan to talk with social entrepreneur Bob Muller of Brunswick, who last week launched a crowd-sourcing effort to raise funds to buy the lighthouse. Muller told the paper earlier in the week his group had raised $105,000. Read more about Muller's plan here.
