July 4 traffic falls as predicted

As expected, traffic on the Maine Turnpike dropped over the Fourth of July weekend, sliding more than 4% over last year.

The Maine Turnpike Authority says traffic volumes Friday through Monday at the York toll plaza were 4.3% lower compared to the same weekend last year, according to The Associated Press. The drop is better, however, than the 5.4% decrease the Maine Center for Business & Economic Research at the University of Southern Maine predicted. Because the holiday fell on a Monday, many visitors delayed their departure until Tuesday, resulting in a sharp decrease on July 4.

Overall, holiday traffic on the entire 109-mile highway dropped 2.9%.
