Katie Shorey, who heads the entrepreneurs volunteer group Startup Maine and recently served as innovation program manager for WEX Inc., has joined Live + Work in Maine as director of engagement.
In her new role, Shorey will work with Executive Director Nate Wildes to advance the business advocacy group’s mission of attracting young professionals to the state, according to a news release Monday.
“Katie comes to us with a track record of success in both the private and nonprofit sectors,” said Wildes. “As someone who is, herself, a ‘boomerang,’ having grown up in Maine and chosen to return here to further her career and quality of life, she is uniquely qualified to help engage our stakeholders and help develop strategies to bring talented professionals to Maine and encourage young people to stay in Maine.”
Prior to joining WEX earlier this year, Shorey worked for Peoples’ United Bank, where she focused on community relations and business development. Before returning to Maine, she worked in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, and recently served as corporate relations director at the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies.
Shorey is also president and chairwoman of Startup Maine, which works to foster and cultivate new businesses in the state and holds an annual conference in Portland.
A Westbrook resident, Shorey earned a bachelor of arts degree in government from St. Lawrence University.
With Shorey’s hiring, Ed McKersie and Dave Vasconcelos, who co-founded Live + Work in Maine three years ago, will step back from operational roles in the organization, according to the release. The two will remain on the Live + Work advisory board.
