Oxford-based Keiser Homes has won a $2 million MaineHousing contract to replace aging mobile homes with new houses.
Keiser's work makes up half of MaineHousing's $4 million pre-1976 Mobile Home Replacement Program, which provides low- and no-interest loans to Maine residents who live in an old mobile home and qualify for heating assistance, according to the Sun Journal. An out-of-state mobile home manufacturer will perform the other work. The program is part of a law passed in 2009, which called for up to $30 million to replace Maine's aging housing stock with energy-efficient models. But Maine-based home builders were previously left out of the program, with homes purchased through MaineHousing built by a mobile home maker in Pennsylvania. A recently added provision allows modular home builders to bid on the project, according to the paper.
Modular homes will go to larger families needing four or more bedrooms, while smaller families will receive mobile homes. So far, Keiser has been tapped to build one modular home.
