A $3.4 million federal grant aims to help a number of mid-Maine health organizations become a “one-stop shop” for mental health, substance use treatment and other health care services in their communities.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the grant to Kennebec Behavioral Health, headquartered in Waterville.
Kennebec Behavioral Health will partner with Augusta-based Crisis & Counseling Centers, MaineGeneral Health, Hart Consulting in Gardiner and several others to implement the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model for care delivery, according to a news release.
The funds will allow the partners to expand services.
The Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model ensures access to 24/7 crisis care as well as care coordination with hospitals, primary care, law enforcement and schools. Plans call for the clinic to provide a range of services, including medication-assisted treatment to help stop overdoses, among other capabilities.
The effort will be led by KBH’s senior engagement officer, Tina Chapman, and the organization’s clinical director, Carla Stockdale,
The grant is considered a huge opportunity for KBH, said its CEO, Tom McAdam.
“It paves the way for mental health and substance use disorder services to be integrated and coordinated across settings and providers and will provide increased access to high-quality care,” he said.
The model also sets the stage for a system of cost-based reimbursement for services, he added.
Kennebec Behavioral Health was founded in 1960 and operates clinics in Waterville, Skowhegan, Winthrop, Augusta and Farmington.
