King, Collins split in tight budget vote

The U.S. Senate passed by a margin of one vote a $3.7 trillion budget resolution that split Maine's delegation. It was the first time in four years that the Senate has approved a budget.

The Portland Press Herald reported Sen. Angus King voted with Democrats and Independent Bernie Sanders for the budget, while Sen. Susan Collins opposed the proposal.

The New York Times reported that the Senate now must negotiate to reconcile the budget approved by the Democrat-controlled Senate and another spending plan approved by the Republican-controlled House.

The Republican plan would make sharp domestic spending cuts, the paper reported, while the Democrat plan includes $100 billion up front for infrastructure projects and includes tax changes that would raise an estimated $975 billion over 10 years.
