Maine Mountain Children’s House, a nonprofit Montessori school in the Franklin County town of Kingfield, finished a renovation and expansion designed to triple its capacity.
The project included an updated HVAC system, bigger and brighter windows, a refreshed space and a 1,000-square-foot addition.
“This is not a patch job,” said Emily Yearwood, the board’s chair. “This is taking a really structurally sound building and a great location, with access to local trails, the park, library and the elementary school and making it into an ADA accessible, energy efficient, beautiful childcare center. It’s what we always dreamed this school to be and it’s finally happening.”
The school includes a toddler classroom and a classroom for children age 3 to 6, including a pre-K program for those preparing to enter the public school system.
A Farmington parent, Amber Stone, said she chose to drive the 22 miles to Kingfield each day so that her children could attend the school. Enrollment was made possible by the school’s scholarship program and a state subsidy, according to a news release.
“There were days that the drive was tedious, but it was always worth it,” Stone said. “We found ways to adapt, like working remotely in Kingfield when possible and at times carpooling with other families who lived in New Portland or New Vineyard.
