Following findings of an 18-month consultant’s study, the town of Kittery is looking for public input about the types of development and infrastructure needed in Kittery Foreside.
Results of the 11-question survey, which can be completed online here, will help the town evaluate land-use ordinances and plan investments in areas such as public parking, open space, transit and street design, according to the town website.
Printed copies of the survey are also available at the Kittery Town Hall, 200 Rogers Road.
The town says the survey is “an important next step” to the Kittery Foreside Land Use, Parking, and Traffic Circulation Study, begun January 2017 and completed last July.
The study by consultants T.Y. Lin International and MRLD Landscape Architecture + Urbanism examined current conditions and anticipated changes in the Foreside, a historic downtown area bounded by the Piscataqua River and that includes Walker and Wentworth streets and a part of U.S. Route 1.
The study recommended changes such as the consolidation of the area’s three land-use zones, the addition of lighting and sidewalks to some streets, and creating a “more uniform, village-like” feel along the Route 1 corridor, known as Gourmet Alley.
“Growth and change are occurring in the Foreside. This study details how change can occur without fundamentally changing what the community appreciates,” the consultants wrote in their 108-page final study report.
