Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield will receive a $2.8 million Department of Energy grant to lead a regional training program for solar energy installers.
KVCC, one of only nine institutions in the country selected to lead the solar-installer training programs, will work with all seven community colleges in Maine and its high school technical centers, as well as community colleges in New Hampshire and Vermont, to train and certify photovoltaic and solar heating instructors. The instructors will then be able to certify students in their local communities, according to a press release from U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree. "This is going to give us a chance to work with our colleagues to help deliver training to the business community," Barbara Woodlee, president of KVCC, said in the release.
The grant is part of a DOE initiative that will provide $87 million to 47 projects across the country, from training programs to solar power research, to support the development of solar energy technologies and speed the deployment of solar energy systems.
