L/A looks at daily air service

A new study finds Lewiston/Auburn may be able to support daily airline passenger service, if the cities are willing to invest in the necessary upgrades.

Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport Manger Rick Cloutier intends to present the study to a joint meeting of Lewiston and Auburn city councilors this evening, according to the Sun Journal. The marketing study, sponsored by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, found that 278,207 ticket-buying air passengers live close enough to the A-L airport to use it instead of the Portland International Jetport and regional airports in Augusta and Rockland.

The study estimates 468,000 passengers per year would use the airport, and many would fly more than once. Cloutier suggested the airport serve primarily as a transportation hub to Boston or New York, and possibly also offer service to limited regional leisure destinations like Florida. A federally funded runway extension that would be necessary for the daily service is already planned in 2011, but Cloutier says the required terminal and security upgrades would have to be paid for by the cities.
