Laid off mod home employees get help

Employees laid off from Maine's modular home industry have received a helping hand from the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Labor yesterday said it granted nearly $150,000 to the Maine Department of Labor to assist approximately 54 workers who have been laid off at three modular home companies in Oxford -- Burlington Homes; Eco-Building Systems, which was formerly Oxford Homes; and Keiser Homes. Layoffs at the three companies started in early 2007 and continued through spring 2008.

All affected workers will receive dislocated worker services. Additionally, 24 of the workers who have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance will also receive counseling, case management and job search and placement assistance, among other things.
