Land-based aquaculture proposal in Jonesport receives critical permit

The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has awarded a submerged lands lease application permit to the Kingfish Co., a Dutch company proposing to build a recirculating aquaculture system operation in Jonesport to produce yellowtail kingfish under the name Kingfish Maine.
The permit allows the company to install intake and discharge pipes.
“We are encouraged by the approval of our permit application with no special conditions and no public objections,” Ohad Maiman, founder and CEO of the Kingfish Co., said in a news release. “Prior to submission, substantial design and engineering efforts were required to assure our future operation complies with state and federal regulations.”
The permit is considered critical for construction of the facility, projected to produce 6,000 to 8,000 metric tons annually upon completion.
The company has secured a purchase agreement for its proposed site at 9 Dun Garvin Road, near Chandler Bay on Route 187. The goal is to start construction in the second half of 2021.
The company announced its plans for the proposed $110 million land-based aquaculture facility in November 2019.
Kingfish already operates a land-based recirculating aquaculture system in the Netherlands.
