Law school renews request

Attorneys representing the fledgling Husson University law school renewed their request to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for permission to have their graduates take the Maine Bar Exam.

A similar request was denied last year by the justices, who pointed out several shortcomings in the new school's operation. Peter Murray, representing Husson, argued Tuesday that many of those issues have been resolved and that students would receive the same standard of legal education as Portland's University of Maine School of law, Maine's only law school accredited by the American Bar Association, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Husson's accreditation is an issue, since the ABA requires a tenure program for faculty for accreditation - something Husson abolished 15 years ago. The university also is seeking accreditation for its law school from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which does not require faculty tenure.

Husson and counsel for the Board of Bar Examiners both suggested the creation of a commission to evaluate and monitor the law school's standards and report back to the court, according to the paper. Husson officials hope for a decision from the court by the end of January.
