Following months of debate, the Maine Legislature has passed an agreement on a congressional redistricting proposal that relocates a handful of communities in central Maine to new districts.
The proposal moves Waterville and Winslow from the 2nd district to the 1st, and relocates the following municipalities from the 1st to the 2nd: Albion, Unity Township, Sidney, Belgrade, Rome, Vienna, Mount Vernon, West Gardiner, Gardiner, Monmouth and Randolph. A federal court ordered lawmakers to reapportion the districts by Friday to reflect 2010 U.S. Census population figures and better balance the two districts, but a bipartisan panel over the summer was unable to draft a plan that garnered both Democrats' and Republicans' support, MaineToday Media reported. The compromise reached Monday staves off Republicans' plan to use their legislative majority to pass their preferred redistricting proposal.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree currently represents District 1, and U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud District 2.
