Lawmakers to consider $14.5M UMS request

A request for an extra $14.5 million in funding for the University of Maine System will go to lawmakers, after it received approval yesterday from the system's board of trustees.

The $14.5 million for the 2012-2013 biennium is a 4% increase from the 2011 appropriations the system is receiving from the state, and without it UMS officials said they will be forced to raise tuition 5% at all institutions, according to the Bangor Daily News. Rebecca Wyke, UMS vice chancellor for finance and administration, presented the request to the board last night, and told the paper afterwards she was unsure if the Legislature would approve the increase. Lawmakers are facing a potential budget shortfall of up to $1 billion over the next two-year budget.

If the increase is approved, state appropriations for UMS would be $183.5 million for the 2011-2012 academic year and $190.9 million for the following academic year, according to the paper.
