Lawmakers want more time on gambling bills

A legislative committee is asking for more time to issue recommendations on a slate of proposals to expand gambling in the state.

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported that Democratic state Sens. John Tuttle of York and John Patrick of Rumford plan to speak this week with legislative leadership to request more time to work on the various bills.

Patrick told MPBN that the issue is too large for committee members to issue policy recommendations by a Jan. 24 deadline. Patrick previously disbanded a gambling study group he was selected to lead, saying that the panel did not meet his expectations for reviewing data, expert testimony and economic impacts of expanding gambling in the state.
