Legislative candidate charged with theft
An Augusta man running for state representative has been charged with theft by deception for allegedly falsifying documents in an attempt to receive public campaign funding. The charges come after an investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office.
Michael Hein allegedly signed forms showing 67 Maine people had given him $5 donations, meeting the 60 $5 donations needed to quality for Clean Election funding, according to the Portland Press Herald. However, the money was allegedly his, and at least 13 people on his donor list said they did not contribute to his campaign. He could have received up to $5,000 in public campaign funding.
Hein faces as much as 364 days in jail or a $2,000 fine. His court date is June 6. His name apparently is still on the list of legislative candidates, and he has not yet dropped out of the District 57 race.
