Legislature approves $150M in bond proposals

Five bonds totaling $150 million were approved by the Legislature Thursday and will go to voters for final approval in November.

The largest, a $100 million bond for transportation projects, also includes $76 million for road and bridge updates and $24 million for projects such as the proposed rail extension that would connect the International Marine Terminal with Icelandic container shipping company Eimskip, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Gov. Paul LePage pushed the transportation bond. He agreed to sign off on the bonds earlier in August after a standoff with Democratic legislative leaders, the newspaper noted.

The governor is expected to sign the bills Friday, according to the Bangor Daily News.

That newspaper said legislators on both sides of the aisle lauded the bond package as an investment that will create jobs in transportation infrastructure, higher education and support Maine’s Army National Guard armories.
