LePage amends regulatory package

Gov. Paul LePage has shrunk the size of his regulatory reform proposal, the same day that hundreds turned out for a public hearing to testify on the original bill.

LePage yesterday submitted an amended LD 1 to the Committee on Regulatory Fairness and Reform that removed some of the more controversial items, including repealing the electronic waste law, repealing a law that prohibits the use of chemicals in children's products, and changes to regulations related to vernal pools, air emissions and the Land Use Regulation Commission, according to MaineToday Media. Members of his staff said LePage still supports the initiatives, but opted to remove them to continue working on the language of LD 1 and submit them later as governor's bills "rather than hold up the committee process," Kathleen Newman, his deputy chief of staff, told the news service.

The bill still includes proposals to repeal the Maine Informed Growth Act, which subjects big-box developments to economic impact studies, and to replace the Board of Environmental Protection with a three-judge appellate board.

Many of the people at Monday's nine-hour public hearing spoke against the repeal of the ban of chemical bisphenol-A in plastic containers, the item that was removed, according to the Bangor Daily News.
