LePage appoints Rier as acting education head

Gov. Paul LePage has appointed Jim Rier, deputy commissioner for the Maine Department of Education, as the acting commissioner of the department, following the resignation of Stephen Bowen last month.

LePage announced Rier’s interim appointment Tuesday in a press release, saying that the search for a permanent commissioner is ongoing. Rier’s focus since joining the department 10 years ago as the department’s director of finance and operations has been in education funding.

Prior to joining the state’s education department, Rier was a senior project engineer at Buick and had served as president of the Machias-based Rier Motors Co., which was founded by his father. His past experience also includes service on the board of directors for Bangor Hydro Electric Co., the Maine Community Foundation, the Regional Medical Center at Lubec and the Washington County Education and Economic Development Alliance.
