LePage overstated unemployment process complaints

The Sun Journal reported that Gov. Paul LePage overstated the number of business complaints about the state's unemployment claim appeals process in making his case for reforms of the system.

The paper reported that just 30 of around 400 complaints came from business owners since he took office in January 2011, figures out of line with what he said were "hundreds and hundreds" of complaints about the unemployment appeals process.

The paper reported that around 60 of the 400 total complaints about the unemployment system were about the hearings process — nearly half were from claimants and the other half from employers.

In total, the largest number of complaints about the unemployment system were from claimants contesting the denial or amount of their unemployment benefits.

Hearings officers for the state's unemployment claims system told the paper earlier this year that the governor had scolded them about ruling too often in the favor of claimants, which the governor denied.
