LePage presumed winner of governor race

Independent candidate Eliot Cutler is expected to formally concede the race for governor to Republican candidate Paul LePage at a noontime press conference.

As of late this morning, LePage held 38.1% of the vote and Cutler held 36.7% with 94% of the precincts reporting, a fewer than 7,500-vote margin, according to the Bangor Daily News. Cutler's campaign manager, Ted O'Meara, told the paper Cutler called LePage this morning and conceded. Democratic candidate Libby Mitchell conceded the race yesterday at 10 p.m., with about 20% of the vote. Support for Cutler was stronger in Portland and Bangor, as well as larger communities in southern Maine, while LePage led in smaller, rural towns. Independent Shawn Moody received 5% of the vote, while Independent Kevin Scott had 1%. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap told the Portland Press Herald such a close race may not be decided today.

Meanwhile, incumbents for Maine's two congressional districts remain in place. U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree beat out opponent Dean Scontras in the 1st District congressional race, garnering 57% of the vote with 75% of precincts reporting and leading Scontras to concede last night, according to The Associated Press. U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud bested Republican Jason Levesque in the 2nd District race, winning 55% of the vote with 89% of the precincts reporting, according to the Press Herald.

In related news, voters approved two bond issues totaling nearly $15 million, according to The AP. A $5 million bond package that will direct funds to improve access to dental care won 57%-43%, and nearly $10 million for conservation won 64%-36%.
