LA Arts, the arts agency for the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, found a new home on Lisbon Street in Lewiston that will allow it to create space for offices, art galleries and performances as well as new services such as film series showings.
The Lewiston space, at 168 Lisbon St., is just a short walk from its existing space at 221 Lisbon St.
While the new 2,395-square-foot leased space is comparable to the size of its previous space, the new site is all on one floor, rather than two levels. That will give the arts agency more flexibility in accommodating art showings and performances, said board Chair Jim Parakilas.
The new space also will allow for some new expanded services, such as film showings, and classes and workshops, Parakilas said.
“The space is really lovely. It’s one big, long room that allows for different uses,” Parakilas said. “It will be set up for musical performances, it will have lighting and we’ll arrange the walls for gallery showings. It will be able to accommodate all of our needs from showings to performances to offices.”
“The space has high ceilings and great space for galleries,” said Dustin Boutin of Magnusson Balfour of Keller Williams Realty, who brokered the deal along with broker Craig Church. They represented landlord EAT Holding at Lisbon St LLC. LAArts did not have a real estate representative.
The new space had previously been used for offices. After some renovations and upgrades, LA Arts hopes to move in by the fall, with an exact date to be determined later.
LA Arts spent a year looking for new space, Boutin said.
“It was very important to us to be on Lisbon Street. It’s the center for arts and cultural organizations in Lewiston- Auburn. It’s the restaurant heart of the cities. It’s a very vibrant place,” Parakilas said. “It’s also the center of the immigrant business community. It was important that we stay on Lisbon.”
Lisbon Street is also the route of Art Walk LA, which takes place on the last Friday of every month from May to September.
LA Arts was founded in 1973 as LPL Plus, a program established by the trustees of the Lewiston Public Library to fill gaps in the region’s arts and cultural offerings. The Auburn Public Library soon joined, forming LPL Plus APL. In 1988, it was renamed LA Arts and was designated by the two city governments as the local arts agency of the twin cities.
