Lewiston manufacturer gets boost from Turkey project

WahlcoMetroflex, a Lewiston-based manufacturer of power-generation and pollution-control equipment, completed a $310,000 project for Bis Enerji Elektrik Uretim AS power plant.

The Maine company exported gas turbine equipment, including a diverter damper unit for the natural gas plant, one of several deals the company has done in Turkey in recent years, according to John Powell, general manager of WahlcoMetroflex.

"We've been doing a lot of business with Turkey because it keeps increasing its need for power as a developing country, and it is sitting on a bunch of natural gas," Powell told Mainebiz. "We've done three projects for Turkey this spring and expect more."

Bis installed the new equipment at its power plant in Bursa, Turkey, to expand its current electricity-production capacity by 76 megawatts. The Bis Enerji Elektrik Uretim AS project was supported by a $66.3 million guarantee from Export-Import Bank of the United States in favor of UPS Capital Business Credit's loan to the Turkish energy supplier. Powell said the project helped keep the company's 100 workers busy throughout the spring.

Two years ago, WahlcoMetroflex was bought by a British firm, Senior plc, based in Ricksmansworth, England, for $13.3 million.
