A Lewiston-based apparel manufacturer has been acquired by Totes Isotoner Corp., the world's largest umbrella maker.
Acorn Products Co., which makes socks and slippers, on Thursday was bought by Totes Isotoner for an undisclosed price, according to the Sun Journal. President and CEO John Donnelly said the acquisition will give the company a global reach and allow it to attract new customers. Acorn, which has 25 employees, will continue to operate in Lewiston, but some administrative positions will be absorbed by Totes Isotoner over time, according to the paper. The company has been based in Lewiston since 1976, though manufacturing occurs in Mexico and China. It grew into a national manufacturer in the 1980s when its slipper socks were worn by NASA astronauts.
Cincinnati, Ohio-based Totes Isotoner makes a variety of items, including umbrellas, rain gear and gloves.
