Lewiston's Forage Market selects site in Portland for second cafe and market

Photo / Lori Valigra Forage Market owner Allen Smith, who plans to spread the popularity of his Lewiston bagel shop to Portland by next spring, starts baking around 4 a.m. Here, he checks and flips bagels over to assure they have a crisp outside that's not overbaked. It takes about 10 minutes to bake each paddle of bagels.

Forage Market in Lewiston, which soared to national attention when the October 2016 issue of Saveur magazine dubbed the cafe's bagels some of the best in America, will be opening its second market and cafe at 123 Washington Ave. in Portland next spring.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Lewiston market, which includes a bakery and a cafe that offers an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, will be locating its 4,000-square-foot Portland market in the same building complex that houses The Shop, an oyster bar and retail shop run by Island Creek Oysters, and Maine Craft Distilling.

Forage Market’s owner Allen Smith told the newspaper that he planned to open in the spring and will be installing a new wood-fired oven at the Washington Avenue location.

Last May, Smith told Mainebiz he expected the Portland location would eventually exceed the 300 to 600 bagels a day the market sells in Lewiston.
