Libra Foundation head to retire

The man who has headed up the Libra Foundation in Portland for two decades will step down at the end of next year.

Owen Wells has served as president of the charitable trust since 1989, when it was founded by the late Elizabeth Noyce, a philanthropist and former wife of Intel Corp. founder Robert Noyce. Wells will be replaced by Craig Denekas, the foundation's vice president, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The trust has donated $145 million over the last 20 years to various causes across the state, and funded the development of the 5,000-acre Pineland agricultural and educational complex in New Gloucester. Libra also plans to phase out Pineland's executive director position and end a decade-long scholarship program that has paid for Maine children to attend summer camp.
