Liquor minis could see bottle deposit

State lawmakers are considering implementing a bottle deposit on liquor minis — the little bottles of wine and liquor sometimes called “nips” that hold less than 50 milliliters.

Maine Public reported the move would expand Maine’s bottle redemption system for soda, beer and liquor bottles, in place since 1978, in order to encourage recycling and prevent littering.

The Maine House has voted to expand the deposit law.

Rep. Richard Campbell, R-Orrington, who testified in favor expanding the bottle deposit law, told Maine Public he lives near a store and finds empty bottles and cans scattered across his yard.

“It’s not so much litter, but it’s the distance from picking it up at the store and depositing it in oneself and then throwing it out the window,” he said.

But Rep. Jonathan Kinney, R-Limington, said he’d prefer to focus on overall trash pollution.
