Lobster industry gets $2M marketing boost

Gov. Paul LePage has signed into law the bill establishing a new $2 million marketing effort for Maine's lobster industry.

The Portland Press Herald reported that LD 486 also creates the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative to replace the Lobster Promotion Council. The promotional efforts will be funded by variable surcharges that will be based on the type of license held by a lobster fisherman, dealer or processor. For 2013, surcharges will range from $31.25 to $250, and the most common lobster license surcharges will run $62.50 to $93.75.

The council is charged with identifying market areas that will provide the greatest return on the investments made to promote the Maine lobster as a food item.
