Harpswell lobsterman Jim Merryman and solar energy provider ReVision Energy completed the installation of a photovoltaic solar panel system, making Merryman's operation on the former Bibbers Wharf the state's first commercial fishing facility to use and send solar power back to the grid.
With the installation of 44 solar panels at the Harpswell wharf, Merryman hopes to have most of his electricity provided by solar energy, according to a press release.
In total, the 10-kilowatt system is expected to produce over 13,000 kilowatt-hours of energy to power everything on the wharf, from pumps to refrigeration systems.
Calculations from ReVision estimate that the amount of energy produced by the solar-powered system will prevent 20,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the Earth's atmosphere each year, an amount equal to burning 1,020 gallons of gasoline or 21 gallons of oil.
