Longtime Maine broadcaster, PR consultant Ron Palmquist dies at 92

James Ronald “Ron” Palmquist Sr., a longtime Maine news broadcaster, journalist and consultant, died April 17 at age 92, surrounded by his family.

Ron Palmquist died last week at age 92.

Palmquist was born March 10, 1930, grew up in the Chicago area, and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Denver. He would later go on to postgraduate studies in the field at the University of Colorado and Boston University.

He began his journalism career in Denver before moving to Maine and working in both radio and television news during the 1960s and 1970s. Ultimately, Palmquist anchored the evening news broadcast on WGAN-TV, now WGME-TV, in Portland.

After leaving TV, he opened Ron Palmquist Public Relations, and founded and edited Southern Maine Business Digest, a print publication. His freelance articles and photographs also appeared locally and nationally.

He served for many years in professional and community organizations including the Maine Public Relations Council, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Maine Press Association, the Torch Club of Western Maine and the Rotary Club.

Palmquist served in the U.S. Air Force.

A resident of Cape Elizabeth for 55 years, he enjoyed model railroading in his spare time.

He was married for 63 years to Sandra Palmquist, and is survived by his son, Jim Palmquist, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Peter Cameron, and three grandchildren, Anna, Joshua and Daniel Cameron.
