Lottery decision sparks new appeal

Two of the country's largest lottery vendors have taken their dispute over a $35 million state contract to Superior Court.

The state's Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations in October awarded the six-year contract for gaming systems and service to Athens, Greece-based Intralot, the lowest bidder. But the decision was successfully appealed earlier this month by the state's current vendor, Scientific Games of Georgia, which argued that the applications were scored unfairly. Now Intralot is appealing that decision, and maintaining that the state would save $3.6 million by awarding the contract and a possible four-year extension to Intralot, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

It remains unclear whether the state will reopen the bidding process before the court issues a ruling on Intralot's appeal. Scientific Games, which has an office in Gardiner, says it will continue to provide services in Maine after its contract expires on June 30 even if a decision hasn't been reached, the Kennebec Journal reported. The two companies waged a similar battle over the lottery contract in Vermont, which was ultimately awarded to Intralot.
