LURC approves Moosehead development

A scaled-down development proposal for Moosehead Lake received approval from the Land Use Regulation Commission yesterday.

Developer Hank McPherson got the go-ahead to build 17 waterfront lots and 14 wooded lots on Burnt Jacket peninsula in the town of Beaver Cove, which is located on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Representatives of RESTORE: The North Woods, the Natural Resources Council of Maine and nine concerned individuals resisted McPherson's proposal right up to yesterday's vote. They alleged, among other concerns, that McPherson had not submitted proof that unique or sensitive wildlife or plants are not located on the land, the paper reported.

In 2006, the commission rejected McPherson's proposal for 70 house lots on the land, but after the developer worked with the commission to address its earlier concerns, the six commissioners yesterday unanimously approved the plan.
